Why MountainBikeRiding.com’s Home Town is a Cycling Mecca

A while back my friend Josh asked me about writing an article for his blog about the cycling scene in the small mountain town of Flagstaff, Arizona where we both live.  I was excited to write the article because I think Flagstaff has a lot going on in the cycling realm.  It may not be known as a Portland, Oregon, or a Boulder, Colorado, but I think that soon it will be registering on some people’s radars as a progressive cycling town.  So in a nut shell I wanted to share some info with you about why we enjoy living in this cycling centric town.  Here is the article.

By the way Josh’s blog, The Bike Shop Hub is focused on bringing people the news and stories from his different online bike (more…)

Mountain Bike Suspension : Dual Suspension or a Hardtail?

Mountain Bike Fall Colors 2The other day someone asked me whether they should get a dual suspension (full suspension) mountain bike or hardtail mountain bike (rigid frame with front suspension fork).  I think this is a good question because there are a couple of factors to consider when buying a new mountain bike and deciding on what level of suspension that you’re going to get.  In this article I will go over the different considerations when making your selection between a dual suspension mountain bike and a hardtail mountain bike.

Here are some questions you should ask yourself when making this decision.

  • What kind of riding do you want to do?  Downhill (and/or freeriding) or cross country?
  • What kind of terrain do you mostly ride on?  Is it smooth with some roots and rocks or is it (more…)

Mountain Biking, Yoga and the Beaches of Mexico (Sounds Good!)

yogamtbphotoSo the other day this e-mail came across my desk (well my virtual desk) and it couldn’t have come at a better time, because I recently finished shoveling many feet of snow, and it has been bitterly cold here in Flagstaff.  My body is sore, and it’s been a while since I rode my mountain bike; not to mention a little time on the beach in Mexico wouldn’t be bad!  Well, if you’re in the same boat as me or at least want to spend some time doing yoga and mountain biking this might be just the trip for you.  The company that puts this mountain bike vacation on is called Sacred Rides, and they’re based out of Toronto Canada.  Below is their press release for this cool mountain bike trip: (more…)

One of the Most Overlooked and Important Features of Setting Up a Mountain Bike

Index finger on brake leverOne of the most overlooked and important features in setting up a mountain bike is adjusting the brake lever position and reach properly. A lot of times I find that riders have their brake lever in the wrong position or the reach is too far away from the handle bar. This causes a rider to grasp or reach to far out to activate the brake with their fingers and this leads to a less than optimal grasp on the grip.  The feeling we are going for is to be gliding down your favorite trail and not to be concerned with how quickly you can brake if you needed too. It should be a feeling of having confidence that you can react quickly and grab the brakes with out struggling to find the brake levers. The levers should be

What You Should Know About Mountain Biking in Sedona Arizona-Part 2

IMG_0412The first part of this article covered a trail map of Sedona, what the trails are like, when the best time to ride is, the amazing scenery, and 3 things to watch out for when riding in the red rock desert environment.  If that weren’t enough info, well here is more to give you the low down on being ready for great mountain bike rides in Sedona.  This article covers some of the nitty gritty details that will save you some time and hopefully eliminate any hassles you could possibly run into.

Here are some additional things to keep in mind when riding your mountain bike on the trails in Sedona:

  • Most of the trails are marked with signs but they are relatively small and sometimes can be hard to see.
  • While on the trail keep an eye out for cairns (stacks at rocks) that will guide you when the trail is vague. This is usually when (more…)
